Chamomile

Chamomile

Chamomile, a member of the daisy family, has been accepted as an herbal remedy for stress and restlessness since the time of ancient Egypt. In 16th century Europe, it was used to treat insomnia, neuralgia, back pain and rheumatism. Well known for its calming effects on smooth muscle tissue, chamomile is a popular remedy for many conditions.

Taken internally, it soothes and relaxes the body at bedtime, aids digestion, relieves stomach and menstrual cramps, treats ulcers and colitis, expels worms, inhibits morning sickness during pregnancy, and reduces the pain of toothaches when used as a mouthwash. Applied externally, it hastens the healing of skin inflammations and burns, including diaper rash in infants, and is an effective eyewash. People who are allergic to plants of the daisy family, including ragweed, should not use chamomile.
